MEDIA RELEASE

Great Eastern - Pacesetters 30km 2007

While a 30km run is no stranger to many Pacesetters, a 30km race organized for the public is certainly a rare event, one that many serious runners have been waiting for. There are plenty of races for 21km, 10km and 7km, but hardly any beyond 21km. Thus, the Pacesetters Athletic Club, Malaysia (PACM) is taking a giant step forward in organizing a 30km race. With a 30km race, we hope to fill a void in the local running scene. The 30km run would provide peer support for runners preparing for the full marathon. At the same time, longer distance runs would help build a larger base of long distance runners.

The Great Eastern Pacesetters 30km 2007 is scheduled for Sunday 21st January 2007. To ensure the success of this event, the Club, drawing on its vast experience in event management, had the foresight to start the machinery running early this year. We are fortunate too, that Great Eastern was prepared to make an early commitment for the 2007 event immediately after the 2006 one. The race routes had been charted, entry forms printed, vests and bibs made, and our volunteers have already been distributing them at all the running events.

This is second time PACM is collaborating with Great Eastern Life Assurance (M) Bhd in a distance running event, with Great Eastern as the title sponsor. The inaugural event was held on 22nd January 2006. New Balance and Milo are the main sponsors, while PowerBar, Kenny Rogers Roasters and Fitnesse are working with us as co-sponsors. Technical assistance would come from the very experienced FTAAA, and the official hotel is The Coronade Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

A launching ceremony cum press conference was held on 28th November to inform the public of this unique event organized by the PACM.

The CEO of Great Eastern, Mr Alex Foong, in his speech, spoke about the need to strike a balance between work and play, and ever since he joined PACM he has never looked back on running. He is pleased that the objective is to encourage more participants in the field of marathon running. He is glad that Great Eastern is the sponsor for the second time and pleased to note that PACM has targeted an increase of 20% in participation for 2007, as compared to 2006. He was informed by his Singapore counterpart that Great Eastern 10km for women in Singapore attracted 3,500 participants.

Product vouchers worth hundreds of Ringgit will be given to the top finishers, while each runner will receive a quality running vest and a handsome finisher medal to take home. In addition, all finishers for the 30km event only will receive a finisher's t-shirt courtesy of PACM. We have put a cap of 1,200 entries to ensure a quality event. As usual, members get a discount of RM10. For non-members the entry fee is RM40.00.
